Featuring "Salmon Brings Life" by Vikki Preston.
This piece was created to celebrate salmon and the importance of them for our communities. All of the cycles of the salmon are symbolic and meaningful, mapped out in the cycles of the river itself. For those of us that live along the river, we are connected to the growth and changes of salmon; it's an important food for Karuk people, and deeply tied with ceremony. Salmon also reflects the health of the water, so the health of the salmon means the health of us all. In this piece the sugar pine reflects the mountains, to show the connection between the source of the waters, from its beginnings to the end and back again.
